Position Summary
The Legal AI Researcher is responsible for executing legal workflows in AI development with a strong focus on trust, safety, compliance, and risk validation. As a member of the product design process, the Legal AI Researcher helps shape how Onit’s AI products are built, recommending product design based on legal knowledge and research, and providing independent validation before release. Working under the guidance of Senior and Principal Legal Engineers, this role supports the ethical development of AI, ensures legal risk is documented and mitigated, and contributes to internal compliance, audits, and workflow execution. The position also encourages professional development and cross-functional collaboration.Key Responsibilities:
- Product Design Participation: Take part in the product design process from early concept through release, representing legal and trust considerations in design discussions and decisions.
- Legal Workflow Execution: Organise baselines, define research methodologies, and support structured execution of legal AI workflows.
- Compliance & Reporting Support: Assist in audits, prepare privacy statements, model factsheets, and maintain audit logs.
- AI Risk & Validation Tasks: Conduct ethical, legal, and operational risk assessments while maintaining AI risk registry and validating outputs for compliance.
- Trust & Safety Integration: Monitor ongoing legal and risk developments, initiate steps to maintain compliance, and feed findings into trust frameworks.
- Prompt Engineering Support: Contribute to prompt development and iterative improvements in legal AI services.
- Jurisdictional Research: Research and summarise AI regulations relevant to product deployment regions.
- Cross-functional Collaboration: Partner with AI engineering team to deliver legally valid and trustworthy AI solutions.
- Learning & Development: Learn from senior team members and work towards higher-impact roles.
- Independent Validation: Perform independent validation of AI features and outputs against legal, company standards and risk requirements before release, documenting findings, exceptions, and remediation, and escalating unresolved issues.
Required Skills:
- Legal degree or equivalent legal/LegalOps experience.
- Background in legal matter or spend management.
- Strong analytical, documentation, and organisational skills.
- Excellent communication and teamwork abilities, including the ability to explain legal requirements clearly to product and engineering teams.
- Demonstrated ability to learn and adapt in Legal Tech environments.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Understanding of AI compliance and legal risk principles.
- Experience in prompt engineering or legal validation of AI.
- Exposure to legal audits, AI fairness, privacy, or regulatory frameworks.
- Prior client presentations or compliance documentation experience.
- Exposure to product design or product development processes, or to translating legal requirements into product features.
